4 Stars fun game, even better once modified
This is a great “travel” Monopoly game. The one remark I want to make though, is that there are probably too many “money” cards and not enough “rent” cards. In other words, the money supply seems to far exceed the money demand in this game.
So, what you normally end up with, are the losers of this game finishing with a ton of money in their banks because they never had to pay out much — not very realistic to have losers who are very wealthy.
To fix this problem, buy two of these games and take all the “rent” cards out of one game and add them to your other game. This will make money a more valuable resource since the increased # of “rent” cards will present a larger danger to each player’s bank.
This will also have the effect of rewarding players who lay down property cards so that they can collect rent from them — the whole reason that you want to own property (and play the game of Monopoly) in the first place, right?
I also think this increases strategy somewhat because it puts you at a decision between using your property to collect valuable money or hoarding the property in your hand to keep it protected. As the game is now, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that, of the three types of cards, the property card is the last type you want to lay down (unless you have very powerful action card).
3 Stars Card game
This is a potentially fun idea. The directions are a bit complicated and take some getting used to.
We had thought the game was going to be a quick and easy version of the classic.
4 Stars They fixed Monopoly!
I’m not really going to talk much about the specifics of the game play, as other reviewers have already done that quite adequately. But I will say I generally disliked playing Monopoly the “bored” game. It was too long and seemed far too based on luck for my tastes. The card game is also luck based, to be sure, but I find that it has added some much needed strategy to the game. Deciding when the best moment to charge rent, place properties and steal properties can make an seemingly uneven game turn around quickly. It is rare for such a turnaround in a regular Monopoly game; if someone gets good rolls of the dice and hits all properties the first few times around the board, there aren’t many built in ways to catch up. Also, the end game in regular Monopoly is so dreadful. Two people with hotels on several sets of properties trading cash back and forth while the other players have to go amuse themselves with something else. This doesn’t happen in the card game as you are never out; there is always a chance you can get back in the game. One other bonus with the card game is it can actually be player by two players, something you can’t really do with the board game.
My only beef with this game is the quality of the cards. I was really disappointed that the cards are just cheap, glossy, paper cards. I would expect for the price they charge for this game to have a higher quality card. In fact, I’m on Amazon right now looking for a deluxe set to buy hoping the cards will be more durable. I knock 1 star off for that, since I think we are going to wear out the cards too fast. But that should tell you how fun the game is that we actually play it that much!
5 Stars Great Way To Play Monopoly
This is a great way to play monopoly and fun for all age groups - not just children.
5 Stars Monopoly but funner and faster!
I bought this Monopoly Deal card game because we liked Monopoly, the traditional game, but that game was always too long and who has time nowadays to spend hours on a game? So with these cards, it was fast and fun. Objective: To obtain full colored sets of properties while trying to avoid paying rent or having your property swiped by other players. Unlike the traditional board game which has things like “pay…taxes”, or “get kicked out of jail,” or “go directly to jail,”, these cards deal mainly with real estate and then gives you options at the draw of a card to complete your sets, collect rents, go “pass GO!” (which allows you to draw two more cards and widen your options), and so on. There are also hotel and house cards to add to your property cards! There are wild cards to fill out your color property sets as well as advantage options like cards that say, “Just say NO!” which allows you to stop an opponent from taking your property or asking anything of you.
We did about 5 games in 1 hour and 15 minutes. We played as two players but there are options for four or six or more players. With six players, get a second deck per the instructions. We found it fun and intuitive after a while and really enjoyed it. We will share this game with our friends soon.
Pros: 1) Has the traditional similar “traits” of the original game. 2) Can be played quickly, averaging about 10 to 20 minutes per game, 3) Has enough variable ways to play and win. You can win by the instructions of being the first person to have three full sets of properties. If you want to extend the games by a larger margin, you can go for full asset points by adding up all your money AND your property values and be the first one to get to 500 or even 1,000 points. These last two variables are what some people do although I haven’t seen the instructions for it. We have only played the 2-player way.
Cons: 1) Instructions are not as clear as they could be. If you know the original game, it will work better for you. 2) There are situations that arise that are NOT covered in the instructions, 3) There are only THREE houses and TWO hotels available in the whole deck. 4) Some people complain that the “Deal Breaker” card (able to take another players set of properties) ends the game too soon. When the deal breaker card comes up and is used in the play, we often still have half the deck left. 5) sort of picky: The card sizes are slightly smaller than standard. While it makes it easy to put them in columns to line up your properties, some people complain they are slightly too small. It didn’t bother me however.
I would overall recommend the game anyway! It has the fun of Monopoly, is faster, and funner! You can play several games, get there faster in your property goals, and have a variety of ways to make the stakes more interesting! I just bought a second set so we can have more players or we can make the game more variable! It is really fun and time flies by fast!
One note: There is an indication on the Amazon website: “Warning, choking hazard…” The only thing that might be considered a choking hazard is the wrappers that the cards come wrapped in. There are no moving parts, no game pieces or anything - just the cards wrapped in plastic wrap, the instructions and the small box the cards come in. It’s about as dangerous as a deck of regular playing cards.
